BC publishers dominate 2019 BC Historical Federation Award shortlist

The British Columbia Historical Federation announce the shortlist for the annual Historical Writing Competition on April 23, 2019. The BC Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Historical Writing is awarded to the author whose book makes the most significant contribution to the historical literature of the province.

We were thrilled to see so many BC publishers nominated (6 of the 7 titles)! Congratulations to all the finalists.

  • Blossoms in the Gold Mountains: Chinese Settlements in the Fraser Canyon and the Okanagan by Lily Chow (Caitlin Press)
  • Against the Current: The Remarkable Life of Agnes Deans Cameron by Cathy Converse (TouchWood Editions)
  • Trail North: The Okanagan Trail of 1858-68 and its Origins in British Columbia and Washington by Ken Mather (Heritage House Publishing)
  • Shared Histories: Witsuwit’en-Settler Relations in Smithers, British Columbia, 1913 – 1973 by Tyler McCreary (Creekstone Press)
  • Before We Lost the Lake: A Natural and Human History of Sumas Valley by Chad Reimer (Caitlin Press)
  • S.S. Minto: The Arrow Lakes Longest Serving Sternwheeler by Bruce Rohn (Arrow Lakes Historical Society)
  • The Last Suffragist: Standing The Life and Times of Laura Marshall Jamieson by Veronica Strong-Boag (UBC Press)

The winners will be announced during the BCHF’s annual conference, The British Columbia Historical Federation Conference Book Awards Gala in Courtenay on June 8. The winner receives $2,500, second place receives $1,500, and third place receives $500. A book will also be awarded the Community History Award and $500.
