Winners announced for BC Historical Federation book awards 2017

The British Columbia Historical Federation (BCHF) announced the winners for the Annual Historical Writing Competition on Saturday, May 26, 2018. The annual Book Awards Gala was held in partnership with the Arrow Lakes Historical Society in Nakusp, BC, as part of the BCHF Annual Conference.

The BC Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for historical writing and $2,500 was awarded to Dr. Ben Bradley for British Columbia by the Road: Car Culture and the Making of a Modern Landscape (UBC Press).

Second prize and $1500 was awarded to Infidels and the Damn Church: Irreligion and Religion in Settler British Columbia by Lynne Marks (UBC Press). Views of the Salish Sea: One Hundred and Fifty Years of Change Around the Strait of Georgia, by Howard Macdonald Stewart (Harbour Publishing) won third prize and $500.

Doug Brigham, Collections Management & Planning Librarian at UBC Library accepted first and third prize on the authors’ behalf.

The Community History Award and $500 was presented to Wayne Norton for Fernie at War: 1914-1919 (Caitlin Press). The award recognizes local and community history, which often provides the most sought-after information by historians researching a particular area.

The award finalists were announced back in April.
