BC historical writing award shortlist released

The British Columbia Historical Federation announced the shortlist for the Annual Historical Writing Competition on April 11, 2018. The annual competition recognizes the authors whose books have made the most significant contributions to the historical literature of BC; the top prize is the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Historical Writing and a $2,500 cash prize.

Many congratulations to the authors and publishers on the shortlist. Read Local BC was excited to see five of the seven books on the list were from BC-based publishers.

  • British Columbia by the Road: Car Culture and the Making of a Modern Landscape by Dr. Ben Bradley (UBC Press)
  • Kwädąy Dän Ts’ìnchį: Teachings from Long Ago Person Found, edited by Richard J. Hebda, Sheila Greer, and Alexander P. Mackie (Royal BC Museum)
  • Infidels and the Damn Church: Irreligion and Religion in Settler British Columbia by Lynne Marks (UBC Press)
  • Fernie at War: 1914-1919 by Wayne Norton (Caitlin Press)
  • Views of the Salish Sea: One Hundred and Fifty Years of Change Around the Strait of Georgia by Howard Macdonald Stewart (Harbour Publishing)

The winners will be announced at the British Columbia Historical Federation Conference Book Awards Gala held in partnership with the Arrow Lakes Historical Society on Saturday, May 26, 2018, 6:00 pm in Nakusp, BC.
