For the new year, we’re readjusting our weekly events roundup. We’ll be posting on Friday (instead of Monday) about forthcoming events from Friday to the following Thursday. Here’s our first roundup for the year: there is definitely something for everyone!


Friday afternoon, January 19, Jack Knox will be signing copies of his book on Salt Spring Island.

On Saturday, January 20, Mark Zuehlke will speak at the Vancouver Art Gallery with art historian and curator Patrik Andersson. The presentation is inspired by Gordon Smith’s black paintings, with a discussion on Zuehlke’s book, Operation Husky.

Grant Lawrence is putting on an evening of music, stories, and songs during the Brackendale Eagle Festival on Saturday, January 20.

Next week on Wednesday, January 24, SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts welcomes poet and artist Oana Avasilichioaei as the Audain Visual Artist in Residence in January 2018. As part of her residency, Oana will present LIMBS & THRESHOLDS, an immersive multimedia performance of poetic texts, image projections, and audio performance.

The 2018 Vancouver Writers Fest’s Incite series kicks off on Wednesday, January 24 with 4 incredible poets: Adèle Barclay, Aislinn Hunter, Richard Harrison, and Cecily Nicholson.

Claire Sicherman will be launching her memoir Imprint: A Memoir of Trauma in the Third Generation on Salt Spring Island (where she lives) next week on Thursday, January 25.

The Twisted Poets Literary Salon is a fortnightly evening of poetry and an open mic presented by Pandora’s Collective. Next Thursday, January 25, the featured poets include Onjana Yawnghwe, Cornelia Hoogland, and Marcus McCann.

The Vancouver Historical Society presents monthly talks for its membership (anyone can join), and January’s speaker is Daniel Francis. Join the VHS on Thursday, January 25 for a well-illustrated talk based on Daniel’s book Where Mountains Meet the Sea commemorating the 125th anniversary of North Vancouver District.
